Flight Nursing!
crzegrl has an awesome video blog posted in which she takes viewers on a tour of her office (and a flippin’ cool office it is). Go check out her awesome Vanna White impersonation here.
She’s also planning a “how to guide” to becoming a flight nurse. I’m looking forward to that! I really would love to list flight nurse as a career goal. It’s too bad that job openings are VERY few and far between–and way beyond competitive.

Kind of a random question… a bit off topic… You graduated just over a year ago, right?
I was wondering how you found the critical care courses you are taking? I know that some critical care courses/programs want at least 2 years nursing experience before starting them. How soon is too soon to start into these courses? I was thinking of starting into them in the fall–after working for just over a year and a bit.
Any thoughts? Thanks!

I started my critical care course six months after graduating. So far, it’s been fantastic! Despite the preparation for working in ICU or ER, many of the concepts are VERY relevant to med/surg. It gives you a slight bit more comfort with very sick or distressed patients.
I will be starting my job in the ICU 1 and 1/4 years after graduating. They were asking for a minimum 1-3 years experience in med/surg. I had one year, which was borderline, but because I had begun my critical care studies and had shown initiative in other ways (shadowing etc.) that they were more than happy to hire me.
As for how appropriate the timing is of starting the course/job–I really have no idea yet. That is something I would have to assess 10-15 years from now perhaps. However, many people have told me that one year in med/surg is adequate preparation.
I DO know that I could have easily stayed a few more years and learned many many lessons that would perhaps help me in critical care. I’m simply just not as happy there as I could be. Critical care basically takes all the parts of the job I love and leaves behind the stuff I don’t (I was always the nurse that would sit around wishing a patient would code so that we’d have something exciting/interesting to do–while other nurses would gasp in horror).

Thanks for the input…. even tho I am slow on the reply. I am trying to decide if I want to start into a critical care program now or after a little while. Durham College has their program offered online and correspondence, with a two weekend lab component. But I am wondering if I should get more experience before diving into it…
