I have the utmost respect for nurses and the difficulties they face...not so much with the patients, but with the family that comes trucking in with them I've seen them in emergency and on the floor when admitted to hospital once.

While on the neuro floor 10 years ago, as a patient, I used to wander the halls (steroids make you do that) and was amazed at the absence of family members there. Stroke victims and the like who could have benefited from family members coming in even if just to wash their face. That, to me, is family centered care, helping to wash and feed those patients who need it.

Really, it is too bad the many people don't understand the full scope of what nurses do. Even my own mom was surprised when I told her some of what I did as a student. I summed it up to her as this: Whatever you see the interns doing on Grey's Anatomy doing in any episode, that is probably actually a nurses job. :)

In a perfect world, I would have a nice balance between the nurturing & caring side of nursing and the analyzing, technical, critical thinking, decision making side of nursing. Unfortunately, due to workload and patient acuity it isn't always possible and important aspects of the job get pushed to the side out of necessity--often it is the nurturing and/or family centered side. It sucks, but sometimes you just have to choose what is best at the time. It just seems to be a part of life.

Muscleman.... what female nurse was looking at your muscles? That was quite the generalization....

I certainly don't ever want a female nurse again.
They don't respect your privacy!
